The Lands Beyond is the general name used in the Vale for the territories that lie across the mountain ranges to the northeast of the Vale of Fingers. What is uncertain is their nature, extent, and inhabitants. The mountains form a clear geographic boundary, but not a conceptual one. The term does not refer to any known polity or region, only to the acknowledged fact that land continues beyond the range, largely unrecorded and poorly understood.

Travel into the Lands Beyond is understood to be exceptionally difficult. The mountain ranges form the primary barrier, marked by steep faces, narrow passes, and weather that shifts rapidly and without warning. Accounts speak of hidden routes and lesser-known crossings, maintained by isolated mountain communities or unbecoming creatures, but such claims are difficult to verify and rarely supported by reliable testimony. The longer route around the ranges is said to be slow and exposed, and reports of successful journeys are uncommon.

The limited cartographic material that survives offers little reassurance. A small number of rare maps, often copied many times over, show no settlements or landmarks beyond the mountains. All mark the land in some way as hazardous or inadvisable to enter, using cautionary symbols or brief warnings. Notably, several of these maps dispense with such marks entirely and instead label the entire region with a single skull, as though no further explanation were required.

In popular belief, the Lands Beyond are assumed to be hostile and unstable. Stories describe harsh terrain, unfamiliar customs, and powers that do not conform to the social or religious structures of the Vale. Such accounts are inconsistent and rarely supported by direct evidence. What they reflect most clearly is the absence of sustained contact rather than confirmed knowledge.

Within the Vale, the Lands Beyond are most often encountered through tale, sermon, and rumour. Accounts circulate without clear origin or agreement, repeated and reshaped as they pass between communities. Over time, these stories have taken on a mythic character, supplying motives, dangers, and meanings where direct knowledge is absent. As a result, the region functions in Vale society as a narrative space, used to explain misfortune, warn against transgression, or lend weight to moral instruction, without reference to any verifiable account.
