The Divine Rolls, with the Discrepancy Noted

bookgreat-librarycrownholdlore-sourcerestricted

Not a book but a long scroll on worn spindles, in several lengths, kept under lock in the Lower Collection and taken out only under the eye of an attendant. It is old, and it has been copied and corrected more than once; the vellum is patched in places and the ink changes hand. No author is named. A later hand has pinned a note in the margin.

Its kind is a philosophical treatise, long and careful: an account of the ten gods and what each represents, set against the six faculties of the hero as the Houses teach them, and an argument, faculty by faculty, over which gods may claim each one, and on what grounds. It is not a devotional work and does not pray. It is read as the temples read it: to know where each god stands, and what each asks.
