Player Character
Alara
Alara is a Wode Elf who has spent most of her life at the edge of things, watching. She is nomadic and solitary by choice, keeping to the forests that border settled country — drawn not to the wilderness but to the people who live beside it. She studies them the way a naturalist studies creatures in the field: how they move, what drives them, what they let slip when they believe no one is watching.
The Watcher at the Treeline
For most of her life, watching was the whole of it. To observe is to leave a thing as it is, and a thing left as it is can be understood; to step in is to change it, and change spoils the study. She holds this less as a philosophy than as a habit grown so deep she has rarely questioned it. She can pass between seen and unseen with an ease that puts others on edge — present one moment, and then somehow not quite remembered as having been there at all.
The One She Could Not Save
Then she found herself somewhere she could not simply watch. She tried to help. She failed, and people died. The failure did not change how she understands herself — she is still, in her own mind, an observer — but it changed what she is willing to do. She will step in now, to keep a loss like that one from happening again. She has not made peace with what happened, and has not looked closely at what it altered in her.
The Crow
Her animal shape is a crow: everything she values most, and nothing she has lately decided she needs. As a crow she has perfect, unremarkable observation and no capacity at all to act — the form is a comfort and a provocation in equal measure. She joins this quest for the plainest reason she has: a group of people walking knowingly toward danger is the most interesting thing she can imagine watching, and danger has a way of stripping people down to what they truly are. She will keep them alive, so that they keep being worth watching.
